Window patterns light and shadow – drawing. The final stage to complete the drawing adds a darker wash to represent the reflections and the areas of deeper shadow in the interior of the building. Some external objects and the clouds help set the atmosphere of the context. In total, there were four stages to the window drawing: setting out, light colour layer, some initial shadows of the structure and reflections and darker areas.

When practising urban sketching, buildings will form a great part of the picture but they won’t normally appear in isolation. The space, the setting, the foreground and the people around will complete the story, tell the viewer about where the sketcher is, who was around and what happened in the space; buildings are the fabric of urban settings but they are not the soul – the space, the air and the atmosphere is. The light and its counterpart, the shades and shadows form a great part of that atmosphere, indicating the time and mood of the scene.

The expression of light and colour in urban sketching opens up an array of possibilities, from controlled tonal work to highly contrasted and colourful mark making. The success at conveying mood and lighting depends on the practical knowledge of colour theory. The sketcher’s style will show through when applying colour; some are careful and precise, some clinical, others bold and adventurous.
