The following illustrations provide examples of templates that are useful in design/planning concept generation. They can be set up for crafting methods, as illustrated here, and digital methods or templates. Again, I use the crafting methods because they are flexible and effective for group interactions.

Figure 6.1. (a–d) Typology template examples—medium- to high-density residential uses (center corridor/double-loaded corridor buildings, high-rise structures). The templates illustrated here are composed of physical symbolic objects formed into shapes that represent various building types. When generating design concepts, it can be useful for an individual designer, team or stakeholder group to “play” with the template pieces as they explore (and gain an understanding of) various design compositions. Included here are cardboard cut-outs for residential buildings, retail uses, etc.In addition, other “toys” and symbolic objects can be effectively used at the appropriate scale such as wood blocks of all sorts.
