Chapter 12

So Many Plans

After dressing in a hot pink lounge set, I called my mom to explain what happened with the freezing and unfreezing and why I was no longer at Coven House. They thanked me for the update since they had no idea what had happened and agreed to come over. When they walked in, Joyen was wide-eyed and shivering. She asked to borrow a book before heading upstairs to shower and go to bed. I was saddened by her melancholy but didn’t blame her either. Her biological dad had frozen her in a block of ice and said he thought she might survive. Not exactly a parent of the year.

Once the water was running in her bathroom, I figured my parents would want to go. They didn’t look too bad after what Heath had done to them, but I thought they might have been mentally drained. “I can open the bakery tomorrow if you’d like to sleep in,” I told them as I started for the door.

“Nonsense,” Dad said. “We’re fine. Thanks to your quick thinking, I think I can speak for the three of us when I say we’re good to go.” He slicked back his slightly damp hair with both hands and smiled.

“Agreed, but,” Mom paused. “We aren’t going anywhere yet. We need to come up with a plan to collect ingredients for Joyen’s spell and,” she paused again. “You need to tell us what’s wrong.” She still wore her coat and unbuttoned it before shrugging it off with finality. “I’m not talking about what that idiot, Heath, did either. It’s something else.” Mom draped her coat over one of the island chairs and gave me a perfectly lovely blanket hug. “You’re upset, and it has nothing to do with the blasted cold. So spill.”

All sorts of emotions and thoughts tumbled around in my head, but I wasn’t ready to discuss the worst of them, which was that I’d have to give up my cat in order to have children. Nuzzling against her, I swallowed. “Well, yes. You’re right. The dragon told me something about Lance.” I released her and moved my mouth from side to side in awkwardness. Lance wasn’t mine, and I wasn’t sure I wanted him to be, not after how he’d behaved recently. Sure, I was a snoop, but he’d told me I could help and then changed his mind and was rude about it. I wasn’t going to deal with a man who wasn’t sure of himself or his feelings for me. That meant he would let me help him get rid of whatever was plaguing him. And if it worked, then we’d, I don’t know, date some more, or … The whole situation made my head hurt. Why were relationships so hard?

“How about you make us some tea and tell us all about it,” Grandy said, interrupting my thoughts. “I could use some liquid refreshment.”

“If you’re sure?” I was still worried about them. Heath freezing my family was a big deal.
