Chapter 12
So Many Plans
After dressing in a hot pink lounge set, I called my mom to explain what happened with the freezing and unfreezing and why I was no longer at Coven House. They thanked me for the update since they had no idea what had happened and agreed to come over. When they walked in, Joyen was wide-eyed and shivering. She asked to borrow a book before heading upstairs to shower and go to bed. I was saddened by her melancholy but didnât blame her either. Her biological dad had frozen her in a block of ice and said he thought she might survive. Not exactly a parent of the year.
Once the water was running in her bathroom, I figured my parents would want to go. They didnât look too bad after what Heath had done to them, but I thought they might have been mentally drained. âI can open the bakery tomorrow if youâd like to sleep in,â I told them as I started for the door.
âNonsense,â Dad said. âWeâre fine. Thanks to your quick thinking, I think I can speak for the three of us when I say weâre good to go.â He slicked back his slightly damp hair with both hands and smiled.
âAgreed, but,â Mom paused. âWe arenât going anywhere yet. We need to come up with a plan to collect ingredients for Joyenâs spell and,â she paused again. âYou need to tell us whatâs wrong.â She still wore her coat and unbuttoned it before shrugging it off with finality. âIâm not talking about what that idiot, Heath, did either. Itâs something else.â Mom draped her coat over one of the island chairs and gave me a perfectly lovely blanket hug. âYouâre upset, and it has nothing to do with the blasted cold. So spill.â
All sorts of emotions and thoughts tumbled around in my head, but I wasnât ready to discuss the worst of them, which was that Iâd have to give up my cat in order to have children. Nuzzling against her, I swallowed. âWell, yes. Youâre right. The dragon told me something about Lance.â I released her and moved my mouth from side to side in awkwardness. Lance wasnât mine, and I wasnât sure I wanted him to be, not after how heâd behaved recently. Sure, I was a snoop, but heâd told me I could help and then changed his mind and was rude about it. I wasnât going to deal with a man who wasnât sure of himself or his feelings for me. That meant he would let me help him get rid of whatever was plaguing him. And if it worked, then weâd, I donât know, date some more, or ⦠The whole situation made my head hurt. Why were relationships so hard?
âHow about you make us some tea and tell us all about it,â Grandy said, interrupting my thoughts. âI could use some liquid refreshment.â
âIf youâre sure?â I was still worried about them. Heath freezing my family was a big deal.
