4.4. Questions and Actions: Latinx
1. Which groups of Latinx people live in your town, city, or rural area?
2. Which groups of Latinx people provide labor or services on which you personally or the economy are dependent (farm workers, low-wage manufacturing workers, or workers in factories near the Mexican border)?
3. What do you gain and what do you lose when workers are poorly paid, work in unsanitary conditions, are exposed to dangerous chemicals, and have unsafe working conditions?
4. How well are Latinx communities represented in your local governments?
5. Are there adequate support services for Spanish-speaking families and Spanish-speaking youth in your area? How could you find out?
6. How has the history of US involvement with Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador influenced the status and position of the immigrant communities that arrived here from those countries?
7. How have stereotypes of Latinx helped prepare for or justify invasions and control of South and Central American countries?
8. Have you been involved with solidarity work with Spanish-speaking countries? How might that work have been connected to the exploitation of Latinx communities closer to home?
9. Did your foreparents speak a native language that has been lost in your family or community? What other losses accompanied the pressure to be a monolingual community?
10. How has the emergence of English as the language used in international communication affected people whose primary language is not English?
11. Do you speak Spanish? If not, what might be reasons for learning to do so?
