Tall in a top hat,

the mayor, who minutes before

was gunned down by urban terrorists,

hands you the key to a city

where no one can live.

You make no acceptance speech,

but grateful and bright

before the cameras

you place a long hard kiss

on the corpse’s lips, pledge

your political patronage,

borrow his hat.

Having invested heavily in real estate

and social love, you set fire

to your own obsolete foundries,

open a chain of carry-outs

in marginal neighborhoods,

make plans to take your family

away to the suburbs.

You become the target

of random acts of inhumanity.

Even you no longer believe

your speeches. You notice

one morning in the mirror

a hint of corruption, the birth

of insolvency, blight and decay.
