south shore, the north shore, and points between.

Margaret was slumped in the corner, Mabel’s arms shielding her from the constant jolting. We were still on a gravel road adjacent to the highway, that being Lonnie’s idea of safety. He was probably right. No one in their right mind would use the road except for the dump truck operators who were stealing the gravel.

I kept to my side of the seat, not looking Margaret’s way, trying not to think about her. I knew my father would take care of everything now that he knew what was happening.

It was beginning to get light. I could see Mabel looking at me. She was puzzled; her face showed it. Margaret’s eyes were closed, her lips tight. I thought about leaning over to her and saying, “Did I hurt you, honey?” The words the mouse said to the elephant after they’d had sex. But it probably wouldn’t have been funny to Margaret, if she even knew the joke. Mabel would recognize it right away.

It was quarter to six when we pulled up at the hospital’s emergency entrance. Dad and Lonnie half carried Margaret through the glass doors. Mabel and I stayed in the car. Mabel turned to me. “You and that woman slept together, didn’t you?”

No one else would have dared ask.

“Well, Mabel, there was only one bed.”

“Don’t give me that. I want to know what happened. Why you’re acting this way.”

“Because she didn’t tell me she had a husband. She let me make love to her, fall in love with her . . .” I started crying again, much to my own surprise.

“Why, Sarah, I’ve never heard you say that before. Did you really fall in love with her? Is it because you love her that you’re being so hateful?” She handed me a Kleenex. “I think you’re just tired, my dear, a good night’s sleep is what you need.”

A car pulled in behind us, and two burly men got out. They looked at the Lincoln, at us in it, then went into the hospital.

I clutched Mabel’s arm, “Oh, God!” I choked, “They’ve found us!”
