Chapter 23

Niah

Niah was never drinking again. She’d woken hours ago, though hadn’t dared get out of bed until the room stopped spinning. Her mouth was dry and tasted weird, her head throbbed and swirled, and her stomach churned with each step when she finally managed to drag herself out of bed.

No, she was never drinking again.

Cocktails were deceiving.

Before Niah could bring herself to leave her rooms, she drank as much water as she could manage, another terrible mistake.

How could those fruity drinks make her feel so bad?

There was a cupcake with a candle sticking out the top on the nightstand, she had no idea how it got there, or what the candle was for. But she was hungry enough to eat it without question, and it was delicious, if not a little dry from sitting on the nightstand all night.

By the time she made it downstairs, the training room was packed. Her head was still pounding, but at least the world had stopped spinning.

Niah didn’t remember much of the night, but the bits she did remember were full of laughing and dancing with her friends. She didn’t know how she got back to her room, let alone changed and tucked into bed, but at least she wasn’t on the floor.

Which was beginning to look very appealing.

Everyone turned to her when the doors slammed shut behind her. Fin, Dea, Sai, and Gren stood at the front of a large group, Sai struggling to stifle his laugh, though Dea looked as rough as Niah felt, and no doubt looked just as bad. Fin shook his head with a slight smile and pulled the attention back to himself to continue explaining the plan for the day.

Her cheeks flamed when she watched him address the recruits. Something tugged at her memory of the night before, but it was too hazy to get a clear image. The air hitched in her throat; what if she’d done something embarrassing?

The doors opened behind her; Niah turned to see Merida ease the door closed before striding toward her.

“I won’t comment on what you look like right now, but I guess you had fun?” Merida mused, a wicked smile playing at the edges of her mouth.

Somehow, just being near the woman soothed Niah’s heart, a sense of comfort washing over her.

“How kind of you,” Niah offered a sickly-sweet smile, “I think so? It’s all a little blurry.”

“I wasn’t expecting you to drink,” Merida said, turning her attention to Fin and the others.

Niah shrugged, “I didn’t realise what it was until it was too late.”

“Well, no matter, but don’t think you’ll get off easy just because of a hangover,” Merida smirked, clasping her hands behind her back.

Niah thought she looked a little more pale than usual, her eyes ringed with purple, her lips dry, then again, everyone looked exhausted.

“Are you okay?” She asked, turning fully to the leader.

Merida cleared her throat as she turned for the door, “Of course. Oh, if you feel up to it, I’ll arrange for you to start learning magic.
