CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Washington, D.C. – December – eternal space

At opposite sides of the backseat, Dorothy and Deirdre stared at each other. Dorothy’s interlocked fingers with her indexes pointing skyward tapped them against her chin.

“Did all that just really happen?”

Palms up was Deirdre’s first reply. “See what I mean? He always makes me feel like that.” She went into a meditative pose, yoga hands on crossed knees, eyes closed. Dorothy’s eyes washed over her.

They pulled from the alley and passed between Cultured and Lesbian Times across the street from each other. The gold Cultured sign glowed under its spotlight. Dorothy straightened. “Hey, isn’t that your magazine office?”

Deirdre’s eyes stayed closed. “Yep. That’s it. Nothing much.”

“Right, so humble. I’d like to see where you work.”

“Believe me, there’s nothing to see. Don’t even have a desk there.” Deirdre peered at Dorothy with one eye. “Besides, where I work is with you.”

“Well, where do you write? You’ve been with the campaign for four months. I haven’t seen you write anything.”

Deirdre reached into her purse and pulled out her tiny recorder. “Not much on note taking. I blab into this quite a bit. I’m compiling everything at home.”

“A recorder?” Dorothy’s voice elevated. “What’ve you been recording?”

“Don’t worry, Dot. I’ve never recorded any live conversations. It’s just me yakking away.”

“You called me, Dot.”

“Oh!” Hand to mouth. “Sorry, sorry! I didn’t think—”

“Except for Cristhal, it’s been some time since anyone has called me that… or darling, by the way.”

“I’m sorry. I won’t—”

“No. It’s fine. I don’t mind… I enjoy hearing it from you.”

Deirdre answered with a warm smile and enfolded her hand over Dorothy’s. Dorothy gazed down in her lap and didn’t return the gesture, but didn’t take her hand away, either.

Deirdre leaned forward. “You know, I’m still ready to listen to those murky delusions of yours.” She glanced at Laima. “Of course, maybe in a car with a driver isn’t best.”

Dorothy chuckled. “Laima is my samurai and true friend. She follows an ancient code and many of her own. I’d trust her with my life. Besides, she already knows it all, don’t you, Laima?”

“And then some, ma’am.”

Deirdre smiled at the warmth between the two women. Dorothy contemplated her own reflection in the window, obscured in a syncopated rhythm as they passed beneath streetlights.

“Can you see my reflection in the window, Dee?”

Turning her head, Deirdre watched for several seconds. “Yes. Except when the lights wash it out.”

“That’s how my memories are. Crystal clear one moment, transparent the next.” She pulled her hand from Deirdre’s comfort. “You should understand that the world was a different place before. Although it wasn’t exactly Orwellian, the government and public mind-set were pretty close. But we were different, my Kenny and I.”

She brought her eyes away from the window to settle on Deirdre. “AIDS was the scariest thing to hit the world since the bomb blast at Hiroshima, but all the hatred and prejudice was heaped almost solely on the gay population. Then, 9/11, and the country was afraid of everything Muslim. Now,
