Chapter Twenty-Six

It was the next day, and I could not sleep last night. I learned too much about Devin, and my beautiful dreams were now nightmares.

I had a dream last night where Devin hurt me. I wouldn't tell a soul about him, and it was still a lot to take in.

I only had one class today. I was supposed to go with Devin afterward to discuss what happened last night. As nervous as I was about this talk, I trusted him not to snap at me. Who knew supernatural creatures like vampires existed?

I had so many questions.

I waited in the car to meet Devin. As I sat in the driver's seat, I glimpsed my surroundings. The day was cloudy as if fall was approaching quickly. The only missing piece to it was no rain and pumpkin spice everything.

It felt like forever for him to show up. I kept asking myself if he was going to show up. My passenger door flew open, and Devin climbed in with a scowl written across his face. I scrunched my brow, looking over at him.

"Everything okay?" I asked, being careful not to make him angry.

"Yeah, just the sun. Nothing to worry about. Let's go." Devin grumbled, putting his sunglasses on. The sun must be getting to him today. Typically, I've never seen it bother him, but today, there was something about that sun.

We drove to a nearby park at the University. We found a small bench underneath a covered tree and sat next to each other, silent at first. I didn't know what to say to him. I didn't know what to ask first. This talk determines everything for me when it comes to vampires.

I still shiver at that word.

"Can I ask now?" I asked Devin, ready to know everything there is to know about vampires.

"Sure."

"How is this possible? Don't vampires— burn in the sun?" I asked. I didn't know the proper questions to ask without offending him. Yesterday, I didn't know vampires existed. Now, I do. An awkward chuckle escaped from me. "I'm sorry. I don't know the kind of questions to ask."

"That's okay, and yes, I can burn in the sun, but that is what this ring with a cross on it is for. It's a magic cross that protects us from the sun. Plus, I always wear a jacket to protect my skin in case I lose my cross, but it doesn't last me long. My father gets the rings for the men and necklaces for the women. There is a witch my dad knows who casts a spell on jewelry. It helps us act human around others; blending in is the key. My father had two pieces of jewelry made, especially if we lost each other. The jewel in the ring keeps the magic of protection inside, radiating through our bodies when we wear it." Devin explained.

I looked down at the ring, examining its features. It was a beautiful ring. It was an oval-shaped jewel that was black but shined in the sun.
