She glanced down at the plate of food with frustration. She was sick of this. All she wanted was to be normal. To not feel this dread every time she ate something. For Reyes not to have to sit down at the other end of the table, so she didnât panic.
âReyes?â
âYeah?â He glanced up. âEverything okay? I cut it all up for you so you could eat it more easily with your sore fingers.â
âI just . . . can you sit closer to me?â
She could feel the tension coming from him, even though she didnât dare turn to look at him. Part of her wanted to hurl. But the other part . . . that told her that she needed to work on getting past this.
She expected questions. Instead, he put his plate across from hers at the dining table.
Okay. She could do this. After all, this was Reyes. Heâd never harm her. If anything, he was crazy protective.
He started eating without saying anything. His inattention helped. A lot.
Using her left hand, she tried to spear a piece of steak. Damn, this was harder than it looked. She managed to get a piece to her mouth, quickly grabbing it to eat. He was nearly finished with his plate and she was still chewing through her first piece.
âWant some more help?â he offered.
She froze, then looked up at him. âHelp?â
âI can feed you.â
A blush rose up her neck and cheeks. âI got it.â
He simply grunted and finished his food. Okay, there was no way she was getting corn on her fork. With a sigh, she went for the mashed potato. That was easier.
âEmme, itâs gonna be cold by the time you eat it, baby.â
Baby. Hell.
âIâm not a baby.â No, but she did wonder if she was a Little. Sheâd spent an hour or so in the playroom this afternoon. Suzy had joined her. But while it had been fun, it hadnât felt quite right. She knew that what she really wanted was for Reyes to turn around and say he would be her Daddy.
âNot saying that.â
âAnd Iâm not sure how Iâll react to you feeding me. This is the first time in years Iâve managed to eat with someone else in the room.â
He nodded and rose to put his plate in the dishwasher. For some ridiculous reason, she wanted to cry. She wanted him to argue.
âCould we try?â she whispered. âIf I freak out . . .â
âIâll give you space.â He said it so matter-of-factly that she felt the knot in her stomach unravel slightly.
Heâd never make fun of her. Or push her for what she couldnât give. As shown by his complete willingness to eat in another room.
âAre you sure you donât mind doing this?â
âIf it helps you eat, Iâll try anything.â
That was possibly the sweetest thing heâd ever said. She nearly cried, but pulled herself together as he held up a forkful of steak. She waited for him to snatch it back. To laugh at her.
Wait. What was she thinking? This was Reyes.
