Breakfast of Champions signals Vonnegut’s turn to the aggressively autobiographical approach of his later works, a decision to foreground from now on the contours of his turbulent interior life. “I want to get into more intimate matters,” he told an interviewer in the wake of the success of Slaughterhouse-Five. “I want to go on more of an ego trip now that I’m free to do it.” Despite strong sales—it became an immediate number-one bestseller and was a selection for the Literary Guild and other major book clubs—not everyone was prepared for the ride, and the novel took a bashing among critics. One famously described it as the work of a “writer in trouble,” another wondered if it was “in some buried way, a calculated insult” to his readers. Vonnegut himself was not that pleased with the results, despite his usual painstaking care in putting it all together. The idea of a film version to be directed by Robert Altman, on the heels of George Roy Hill’s acclaimed adaptation of Slaughterhouse-Five, never materialized, and the uneven quality of the later project by Alan Rudolph (1999) is a testimony to the challenges of bringing this material to the screen.13
