Chapter Eight

Beau sat on his sofa and listened to the bog singing its nighttime songs. He felt as if he’d been in a fog ever since speaking with Jack. He wasn’t sure it mattered anymore whether he proved his innocence or not. Sure, it would be great to find the real killer, the person who had not only snuffed out Lacy’s life but also framed him for the crime. But after speaking with Jack, he’d lost his vision of returning to a productive and meaningful life here.

He’d spent most of his adult life as an inmate. He’d been told when and what to eat, when to go to work and when to sleep. Now without his business to go back to, he felt absolutely rudderless.

As a carpenter on his own he would never be able to compete with the business Jack now had. He still wanted to build something for himself career-wise, but he didn’t know where to begin.

And then there was Peyton...

“Yo, Beau.” The deep voice came from outside.

Beau jumped up and opened his door. Gator stood just outside. “Hey, Gator. What’s going on? Out on one of your nighttime walks?”

“I was, but while I was walking, I figured you’d want to hear what I just now heard through the grapevine,” the old man said.

“And what’s that?” Beau asked.

“I just heard that your lady friend lawyer got shot tonight.”

“Got shot?” Beau stared at Gator for a long moment as his brain whirled to make sense of what he’d just heard. “Shot...” he echoed faintly. “Where... Is she okay?”

“I don’t know anything else about it other than she was shot and rushed to the hospital. I figured you needed to know.”

Energy flooded through Beau. “Thanks, Gator.” Beau turned around and went back inside, where he grabbed the truck keys. He then raced back outside, passing by Gator as Beau raced through the swamp to get to where his truck was parked.

The grapevine in the swamp was usually fairly accurate, but in this case he desperately hoped it was wrong. If the gossip was right, then how badly had she been hurt? Where had she been to get shot in the first place?

A hundred questions raced through his head and his heart was beating a million miles a minute when he finally reached his truck. He jumped inside, fired up the engine and took off for the hospital.

If she wasn’t there, then he would know the gossip had been wrong. He prayed she wasn’t there and that she was in her home safe and sound.

He tightened his hands on the steering wheel as he sped down the streets. He still couldn’t figure out where she’d been if she’d really gotten shot. Had she decided to make a quick run to the grocery store? To another store? Dammit, how could he protect her if she decided to go out and about on her own?

He finally squealed into the hospital lot and pulled into one of the empty parking spaces. He cut the engine, got out of his truck and then raced for the emergency room entrance.
