Chapter Twelve: The Wilting Herb

They had been in the maze for hours, following the route on the map religiously so that they didn't take any wrong turns. However, by this time, Thordric was seriously starting to doubt the map's accuracy.

'Shouldn't we have found our way out of here by now?' he asked Lyanis, who was now the only one keeping pace. The others, though not having sniffed the flowers growing on the walls directly, were feeling the effects of their scent as it wafted towards them as they passed. Hamlet seemed to be suffering the most, yawning so often that Thordric thought he might collapse with weariness at any moment. He had a feeling that it was because Hamlet didn't possess any magic, as Kal and Ourellus (who despite being rusty with his powers, was still radiating with magic) had only recently started dragging their feet.

Thordric himself was fine, but then again, he could feel the magic of the Criad's sacred antlers inside him, pulsing as though actively dispelling the poisonous aroma.

Lyanis simply shrugged. The scent wasn't affecting her at all, though he supposed it was because of her abilities as a forest dweller, which hadn't failed to surprise him yet. 'I don't know. The maze wasn't here last time I came,' she said. Her brow creased slightly. 'If I remember correctly, the royal city was less than half the size it is now, and it certainly wasn't on an island. Yet I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. A thousand years is ample time for a country to develop.'

'Then you have no idea if the map they gave us has the right path on it?' he asked in a pained voice.

'It must be. I doubt that they would deliberately give us the wrong path with what I promised. The idea is too valuable to them.'

Thordric's insides squirmed guiltily. There was no way they could possibly fulfil the promise they had given the women in the village; no-one was in any position for marriage just yet. 'I have to find out,' he decided. 'Do you feel like having a look?'

'And how do you suppose I do that?' she asked archly, staring up at the sixty foot walls.

Instead of replying, Thordric used his magic to levitate her all the way up to the top. Even this, which by far was the magic he was best at, took so little effort than normal that he hardly felt he was doing anything at all.

'What can you see?' he shouted, unsure if she could hear him, for by the way her long hair was whipping about her, the wind above them was very strong. She wailed in reply and Thordric put her down hastily.

As she touched the ground, he couldn't help laughing at her. Her thin clothes had been blown all out of pace and her hair hung in bushy clumps around her face. He even thought he saw that her cheeks, usually silvery grey like the rest of her skin, had a touch of pink to them.
