As you can see, each and every one of these has physical, mental, and emotional consequences that are likely to send John into a downward spiral of negative thoughts and emotions, and into a poor mood.

Even though this example is somewhat extreme, there are probably components of it that resonate with you.

Now, let’s look at another way this may turn out.

Karen’s Morning

Karen wakes up without an alarm at 5:30 AM, her phone on airplane mode, and takes a few deep, intentional breaths. She wakes up slowly and starts thinking of what she is grateful for—her husband, her amazing work, and her two pets. She drinks some room temperature water with lemon and cayenne pepper for digestive performance and turns on a few candles before grabbing a book and heading to the couch.

After reading ten pages, she gets into a meditative position and works on her breathing for twelve minutes while she brews her favorite coffee. Once she’s done, she journals about her upcoming day and her feelings, and reflects on her life as it stands today and her visions and intention for the future. After this, she works on her passion project, a fiction novel she works on every day for at least 30 minutes. Today she feels particularly inspired and excited as she gets closer and closer to finishing her first draft.

When she’s done, she showers, gets ready for work, and drinks a green smoothie full of vegetables, antioxidants, and wholesome supplements. She smiles as she takes her pets out, feeds them, and starts her day relaxed and in nature.

By the time she gets in her car to listen to a podcast on social media marketing—her profession—she’s in a blissful state of appreciation and knows she’s going to have a fantastic day.

Karen’s morning provides a stark contrast to John’s, including:

She woke up calm and without being in a fight-or-flight mode;

Her consistency in sleep shows in her ability to wake up without requiring an alarm;

She starts her day in gratitude, focusing on areas of appreciation in her life;

Every part of her day is strategic and serves a purpose;

She is in control of her emotions and her environment;

There is no stress, rushing, or frantic components.
