The FBI Will See You Now

In late september, Mike Gaeta called me. The FBI wanted to talk. And this time it would not just be him in the room. Something had clearly shifted.

Could I travel to Rome?

Mike explained it would be quicker and easier than all of us meeting in Washington or in London. I agreed, booked a flight for October 2, and was soon in central Rome. I had wanted Chris Burrows to come with me for support, but he could not make it due to another work commitment. The result was that I was rather outnumbered in Rome and had no witness to the conversation.

I was instructed to come to a location close to the Colosseum, to what is called, in intelligence parlance, an OCP, or Operational Clandestine Premises. “I was asked to make my own way there (by taxi from my hotel) and was escorted in and upstairs by a young man (seemingly not part of the team) without any questions being asked,” I wrote in a memo of the meeting, which is dated October 5.

The young man showed me to a boardroom with no windows. I assumed it was a secure room that could not be penetrated with listening devices.

Three senior FBI Russia counterintelligence officials had flown in from Washington for the meeting. We sat down and began what would be a three-and-a-half-hour conversation.

Two of them asked most of the questions. The others were listening, watching, writing notes. In my memo I wrote:

FBI clearly took our (Trump-Russia) reporting very seriously; were now investigating it and other relevant intelligence with vigor. This left them in a hugely difficult situation.
