“Please tell me you found them!” Lisa said as soon as she answered the phone.

“They have found the kids, but they’re trying to get enough helicopters to pick them all up at one time. We’re heading to a hotel in Harlingen, Texas and I wanted you to know. They have reserved rooms for everyone, so when you arrive go straight to the Hampton Inn. It’s three minutes away from the airport and they have a shuttle. Once you land, call me and I’ll meet you in the lobby.”

“Evie, I can’t tell you how relieved I am. Thank you for going to Texas and getting help.”

“It’s our kids, Lisa. I had to do everything I could to find them. Now, get out here so we can see our kids.”

“We will book our flights right now and I’ll call you when I land. I’ll also call the other parents and give them the same information. Thank you, Evie.”

“No need to thank me. We’re a team, you and I.”

They said their goodbyes and Evie had to try once again to hold back her tears.

“What did Steve say?”

She heard Gunny say his name while she was talking to Lisa, but didn’t want to eavesdrop and needed to get Lisa moving.

“We won’t have a third helicopter.”

“No, oh no. Matt, what are we going to do?”

“Just as I said earlier. We are going to get those kids and teachers out of there. I’m going to stay back with the ones we are not able to get on the chopper. It will be okay.”

“But why you? Can’t someone else do it?”

“Yes, someone else could do it. But this is my mission. I will not leave a kid behind, especially not mine. I want Caleb on the first flight back to you. I’ll be okay, it’s what I do. I’m one of the snipers in our group. I can pick off the cartel members from a mile away with my normal rifle, I’ll be using an M107, which is a semiautomatic rifle the Marines use and it can shoot accurately from two and a half miles away. I’ll be okay, I promise.”

“You better be. Don’t get arrogant.”

“Yes, Mom.”

Evie laughed because he sounded so much like Caleb. He grinned when she told him that.
