Chapter 14

Leslie took one look at the bouquet in Conrad’s arms and nearly laughed. “That’s enormous.”

“That’s what she said.”

She laughed. “Oh, she did.”

He peeked around the lavish foliage as Leslie ushered him in. “I’m sorry you got dragged into all of this. If I had known…”

She took the flowers from his hands. They were already in a vase. She put it on the coffee table in the living room. “Breakups aren’t easy.” Not that she would know. Losing Michael had felt like there would never be happiness again. With Conrad, that joy she once felt seemed to be finding its way to the surface. It was too soon to tell, but part of her wanted to believe it so badly.

“No. But I thought it was just going to be between Kyra and me. I didn’t think she’d be so….” He spread his hands wide, not having an adequate adjective for his crazy ex’s behavior. “I can’t believe she hired PIs and had me followed. It’s ridiculous. And then she followed me here?” He shook his head.

Leslie walked into the kitchen to throw away a stray leaf that had fallen from the arrangement.

He followed her, and stopped dead. “You cleaned.”

“I did. Couldn’t expect you to come around and finish the job.” She leaned back against the tiny, but impeccably tidy, counter.

He approached. “I would have.”

She stared at him, finally speaking the words she had been thinking. They were sad, but needed to be said. “I could stay away from you until your divorce is all over. Then we could see… you know.”

He closed the distance between them. “Don’t you dare!” he said fiercely. He swept Leslie into his arms like they were in one of his movies, and the camera was panning out for a sweeping lovers’ reunion shot. He came down on her mouth like hers were the last lips he would ever kiss.

Leslie’s world spun. His tongue dove into her mouth, taking her breath away. She grabbed his elbows to steady herself. He pinned her between the iron in his pants and the Formica of the counter.

They traded back and forth, lips and saliva and tongues, starting with passion and building ever higher, until chills raced along the surface of Leslie’s skin, straight to her breasts, causing her nipples to stand at attention, begging to be touched.

Her hand went down to run along the line of the rod in his pants. A noise rose up in his throat. The sound thrilled her. His broad hands pulled her away from the cabinets just long enough to dart down, cup her buttocks, and throw her up into a sitting position on the countertop. His kisses never stopped raining down on her lips.

Part of Leslie wanted to tell him to slow down, to remind him that she had wanted to spend a lazy day pleasing his body, but the rest of her wasn’t listening. She felt like a sacrifice laid out on some sort of pagan altar, an offering to Conrad’s commanding desire.
