The role of planning

Learning and writing styles differ. Chandler20 has documented a simple but useful distinction drawn by Stephen Spender21 of two poles in compositional styles Mozartian and Beethovenian:

The Mozartians (or serialists) are executors — planning extensively and revising minimally; the Beethovians (or holists) are discoverers, planning minimally and revising extensively. So for Dick Francis, ‘My first draft is it,’ whilst for Hemingway, ‘The first draft of anything is s***’. The Mozartian-Beethovenian model is particularly valuable as a caveat against dispensing standard advice to inexperienced writers.
