Divination vs.
Fortune Telling
Skill or Gift?
I heard a psychic once on a local radio show tell the entire Harrisburg area that divination was a “special gift,” not a skill. She told the people of this capital city that only a chosen few were given the privilege of seeing into the future.
Bah, humbug! The announcer later went on to say that you could see this woman, in person, for a private consultation at a local hotel—fee: fifty dollars. In my mind she was fleecing the public in exchange for a reading and a little common sense on the pretense that only her special, gifted self could assist those who wished to part with their money.
Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing inappropriate about paying for a service rendered, as long as you are not paying for something delivered under false pretenses. It is my firm belief that divination is a skill and an art, not a “gift.” There is nothing that irritates me more than someone who spouts their prowess at this art in the guise of “I’m gifted, yes me, me, me!”
There are individuals who are more open or sensitive to universal information. There are others who have never had a precognitive experience. But once the blocks are removed, there is no reason why every single person cannot tap into the collective unconscious and learn to divine—if not for others, at least for themselves.
Fortune Telling
The idea of fortune telling usually conjures up visions of a dark, sloe-eyed, pleasantly plump female with tons of bangles and bracelets dripping from her body. She exudes mystery, naughtiness, and has the best set of half-revealed breasts this side of the Mississippi. To delve further into her personality, she is not exactly the type you would base your life decisions on, because she does not precisely appear to be of the trustworthy sort.
Today, we often see reports of swindlers and charlatans who are in the market to steal sizeable amounts from unwitting clients. I have been to a woman who has said, “Give me eighty dolla‘ and I will burn candle for you. My seester will fashion it by her own lovely hands and we will pray for you under the light of the full moon!” Baloney!
One woman in particular was a real character. She told me that there was a woman in my family unit who had cast an evil spell on me and it would cost me a pretty penny to remove it. I flatly told her I was the only woman alive in the immediate or extended family unit. She flawlessly continued talking on a different angle.
But there are lots of good readers around. Many occult shops have an individual who is quite capable of giving a good reading. Naturally, some are better than others. If the proprietor feels they are not sufficiently skilled to read you, often they will give you the name of a dependable individual who can.
New Age shops have jumped on the bandwagon too. I have seen more medicine card decks floating around those types of shops than I could count.
