Section 23

After a light breakfast we went to the deck, equipped with our E-SUITs and armor. A solid night's sleep really did wonders. Helen immediately took to the cables that hung between the deck and the inflated balloons. Melody went with Hiroki to see about some well-crafted arrows she spotted earlier. I was left with Finn, unsure what to do. Eadric asked me to train him, and based on Lord Rin’s comment the night before, it seemed like the best use of my time.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever fought before.” Finn murmured. “What if I’m bad at it? Will Lord Rin kick me off the ship?”

I pulled Finn close to me and walked him to the arena. “Finn, Lord Rin isn’t sending you anywhere. Relax. Before the Breaking I never imagined myself fighting mutated creatures, invoking elements or anything of the sort. I HAD to learn it.”

“Fighting a person is much different though.” Finn pulled out Pathfinder and stared at it. “I don’t even know where to begin.”

“Well, that is where we are going to start, at the beginning.” I smiled and placed Finn in the center of the arena. “We are simply going to practice a bit and get you used to moving. We aren’t going to have a ton of time before Lord Rin’s event starts. So, we are going to be brief.”

Finn nodded, he looked eager to learn.

After a few paces I turned around to face Finn. I reached behind me and felt Unity and my knife, each placed in their familiar locations on my back, easy to reach and nestled in their scabbards. I paused to think about the lesson I’d have to teach my teammate. I thought of a few key concepts. It would end up being an amalgamation of what I’d learned before and after the Breaking, from Eadric, and random things I’d thought of since meeting the Rin Clan. I pulled both weapons out and slashed the air.

“Okay, listen up. Weapons are tools, you wouldn’t use a hammer on a screw right?” I slowly paced toward Finn.

“Right.” Finn pointed his blade at me.

“Your body AND mind are weapons. My sword has longer range than your dagger. A sword is made for conventional combat. Daggers can be used for the same thing, just not as good. Right?” I took a slow swipe at Finn.

Finn jumped to the side. “Yes, so what do I do?”

“Think about it, you are a smart guy, use your head. At closer range, your weapon has an advantage over mine; your weapon is used to stab. Aside from the weapon, think about the person using it. Before the Breaking, I used to wrestle, so if an opponent and I went to the ground I’m still in good shape.”

“Kade, check me out.” Helen called from above. I glanced up to see her fly from cable to cable, like a bird gliding through trees. Helen’s E-SUIT hugged her form, drawing my attention as well as the rest of the crew.

I glanced at Finn, who was scoping out Helen.
