The Nature of Story

I began this chapter with the observation that the Bible consists of stories. Have you ever wondered why that is? What do stories do that propositions do not?

Stories engage. They stimulate imagination. They melt resistance. They charm and delight and enable us to grasp concepts at deeper levels than we could through lectures.

Please hear me carefully: I’m not rejecting propositions. I could not have made that point without stating one. I cringe when I hear people say we should only tell stories and quit making arguments. Sadly, I’ve never been able to make an argument that convinced those people they were violating their own dogmatic proposition. Yes, Jesus told stories: “There was a man who had two sons …” (Luke 15:11). But he also made declarations: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:3).
