Chapter 7

AXE

One week later…

“So what do you think?” I ask, my heart pounding away in my chest, both for how excited I am in the presence of the woman I’m in love with, and from the nervousness I feel about Didar’s conditions.

I brought him home two days ago and he seems to be doing okay. He’s eating on his own and every day he has a little bit more energy, but his right eye is still closed shut and wrapped in a bandage and this is the first time since his surgery a week ago that someone takes a look at the injury for something else than simply changing the dressing.

“Well, he is alert and has a good appetite and there seem to be no lasting effects from the anesthetics, so he’s definitely already on the mend, Axe,” Tess says, smiling up at me as she delicately pets Didar while he lies on the couch, soaking up the attention and slowly thumping his tail up and down.

“What about…?” I start to ask, letting my words trail off.

Tess finishes gently unwrapping the gauze around Didar’s head and takes a look at his right eye, slowly shining a light into his pupil.

Didar flinches a little and we both smile. I’m not a vet, but even I know what that means, yet I still have to make sure.

“He saw the light, right?”

She sighs, once again bandaging Didar’s eye and then gives him a treat calling him a ‘good boy’ as he happily licks her small hand.

“There’s a response to stimulus, so we’re in a good place, but we won’t know for sure until a specialist takes a look once the swelling is down and Didar’s able to at least keep his eye open. I’m sorry I can’t say more to reassure you, I wish I could tell you that he’s gonna see just fine, but…”

She stands up from the couch and turns to look at me, her big warm eyes apologetic.

I immediately pull her into my arms.

“Hey, don’t do that, baby: don’t feel bad, this is hardly your fault. In fact, is just because you’re amazing at what you do that Didar is still with us,” I tell her, kissing her head and squeezing her harder.

She blushes a lovely shade of pink at my praise and hides her face in my chest, making my heart race again for an entirely different reason.

This situation with Didar has really brought us together, but we haven’t really talked about us since I impulsively kissed her in the waiting room.

I promised myself that I wouldn’t let things go further between us until we did talk about things, I don’t want her to think this is just a fling to me, so we have just lightly kissed.

I want her to know exactly what she means to me the first time I take her under me and more importantly, I want her to understand that if she wants the same things I do, then this is forever,
