CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Ghosts of the Past

The addition of the new arbolisks to the dungeon bolstered my spirits. I’d thought the species might have gone extinct with Sousa’s death, but now there was hope it could recover. Of course, while acting as guardians of their level, they’d most likely be destroyed in combat, but as long as they were linked to the dungeon, I could bring them back.

I wondered how much magic it would take to resurrect three powerful magical specimens. Xagrim and Ho’Scar required a significant amount of the dungeon’s magic, but I’d never successfully brought an arbolisk back. Sousa either refused to return or the magical link was too weak. Perhaps it took more magic to bring back a creature that was so close to death due to age.

I climbed out of bed and dressed. Zarah was conspicuously absent from my usual morning ritual. Rather than call her, I decided I’d enjoy a moment of solitude to collect my thoughts. While I enjoyed her company, having a perpetual companion randomly appear at your side could get tiresome. I opened my notes concerning the arbolisks and jotted down my observations from the previous night.

Not long after I finished committing my thoughts to paper, a cough from the doorway caused me to turn. It was Drundt. I groaned mentally.

“Well, ya probably know why I’m here. I’m gonna need more workers.”

“Drundt, why is it I am the dungeon master, yet you are the one who continuously punishes me?” I asked.

He laughed. “I told ya it would be a monumental project. I still don’t know if it can be done, but I aim to find out.”

“Let me just say this: the survival of the dungeon and most likely yourself relies on this working. Unless you want to quit now.”

He nodded. “Aye, I think yer right. That’s a lot o’ pressure yer puttin’ on ol’ Drundt. Seems like it might take a bit more compensation, don’t ya think?”

“Are you trying to blackmail me, dark dwarf?” I asked.

“Nay! Just askin’ fer a raise, is all. Maybe a cut of the profit if it works out. Say, ten percent?”

I chuckled. “You have put in more work than the other artisans combined, which is remarkable. If your design works, you can have twelve percent of the loot.”

His eyes lit up at the prospect of so much wealth. “Well then! I suspect that means yer gonna need to give me those extra jimps!”

“Blast it,” I said as I stood from my desk and stretched. The last thing I wanted to do was exhaust myself at the start of the day, but we were on a schedule. “Give me a moment to collect myself.”
