“Mother, I’m home,” Sura called. She was greeted only with silence. Smiling to herself, she raced to her room. Kneeling by her bed, she reached under her pillow and pulled out the black book she found. Flipping to a page she had marked, she placed the open tome in the center of her room. Closing the door, she then reached under her bed and pulled out a bowl and a knife.

Sitting crossed-legged beside the book, Sura took a fistful of dirt from her pocket, turning her hand over to spill the dirt into the bowl. Wiping her hands together, she made sure every speck of dirt she could get off of her hand ended up in the bowl. From the other pocket, she drew forth a single hair from the monster that had appeared in the forest. Placing that in the bowl, on top of the small mound of dirt, she grasped the hilt of the knife and hoped that her sacrifice would be enough.

Holding her left hand palm upward, she drew the knife across it, letting the drops of blood fall into the bowl, staining the dirt as if it were miniature battlefield. Wincing, she pressed the blade deeper as more blood spilled. Finally, the contents of the bowl spontaneously caught fire, lighting the room the way a torch would light a dark cavern.

With a sigh of relief, Sura sat backwards, away from the bowl. Placing the bloodied knife on the floor beside her, she picked up the book with her uninjured hand. As the light from the fire danced off of the contours of her face, she began pronouncing the strange words on the page.
