Chapter 7: Tommy

“I guess I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions,” she said as she pulled out a chair. “I just have a history that makes me a little cautious. My fiancé back home cheated on me with a friend of mine and I guess that makes me a little less trusting than I should be.”

She looked a little unsure of herself for a second, as if she was uncertain of why she was sharing that with me. But I was glad that she had.

“That’s not okay and I’m sorry that you went through it. But I’m not like that. Now, I’m not saying I never was like that, because I have a bit of a past. But I’m not like that now and haven’t been for a while.” I took a sip of coffee and then added, “I can’t believe anyone would ever cheat on you. That guy can’t be very smart.”

She smiled. “Yeah, okay, so can we agree that we both overreacted?”

I nodded. “Maybe we should take each other out to dinner to make things right?”

June laughed. “Wow, that was pretty smooth.”

“Is that a yes?” I was grinning at this point, pretty pleased with myself.

She nodded. “Sure. As long as it’s somewhere where they serve greasy cheeseburgers as I’m dealing with a bit of a hangover.”

“I know exactly the place.”

She locked up the bakery and we headed down the road to Joe’s Diner. It wasn’t exactly the kind of place I ever would have taken a woman like June on a first date, but they had the best cheeseburger in town. If that thing couldn’t cure a hangover, nothing could.

“So you’re the new baker that everyone’s talking about,” Wendy, the 50-something waitress said as she put down two menus in front of us.

“I am the baker, but I had no idea that people were talking about me,” June laughed.

“Yeah, you’re giving us a run for our money with your coffee and cakes. Luckily, you don’t serve burgers and beer, which is what our customers seem to live on.” Wendy winked.

“I think we might be needing a couple of those beers and two cheeseburgers. The baker here had a bit of a night last night,” I said.

“Actually, I’d like a whiskey. Jack Daniels, neat,” June said. “But I’ll definitely have the cheeseburger.”

“You know what, I’ll have what she’s having,” I said. I felt the need to let June know that I didn’t usually order for other people. I didn’t want to come across as that kind of guy. For some reason, I really cared what she thought of me. I usually couldn’t give a damn what went through other people’s heads. But with June, I wanted to be the best version of myself.

“I’ve got nothing against beer, but Jack is the best hair of the dog I’ve ever known.” She smiled.

Our drinks were served quickly and the cheeseburgers came shortly afterwards. June seemed to really enjoy hers. I liked it when a woman wasn’t afraid to enjoy food in front of people.
