Chapter 15

That night, Haley climbed into bed. Sleep. Grisa’s fine. And Joshua . . . Joshua. Would it really hurt to let herself think about him for a while? Warmth gathered behind her chest like a ball of soft cotton and radiated beyond her shoulders and up her neck. She dropped her arm on the pillow above her head and stared up at the dark ceiling. Okay. So she liked him. Really liked him. But what did it matter? She didn’t have time to pursue her feelings. She had to finish her work here and get back to Grisa before Grisa—she swallowed—before it was too late.

She closed her eyes and flopped onto her side. Don’t think about Joshua. And yet, Joshua had not only apologized for his behavior—her father had never done that—but his grief was also so clearly etched in his face, Haley could not doubt his feelings for his sister. Sure, men who loved like that didn’t come around all the time. But did they stay?

She turned onto her other side. She took a deep breath. She didn’t know the answer to that question. And anyway, the answer wouldn’t matter for much longer. Soon she’d leave, and Joshua would return to his life—wherever it finally led him.

Joshua . . .

Haley’s hotel room alarm rang. She cracked open her eyes and turned off the alarm—6:15 a.m. It really was time to get up. She dragged herself out of bed and slogged across the wooden floor to the bathroom. A few minutes later, she slogged back across the floor to the window and peeked through the curtains. So early morning dark that not even a hint of the sun’s rays had yet touched the tops of the mountains. Lucky Alps. They could sleep for at least another twenty minutes. Not her, though. All she could do was think about green eyes that pulled at her heart whenever they settled on her.

Settled. Was that how Joshua made her feel? Her heartbeat fluttered. Heat draped down her neck. She caught her breath. Well, not entirely settled.

She licked her lips, let the curtain fall back into place, and then, sighing—not showering, not eating the hard bread roll and apple she’d purchased for breakfast that morning, and certainly not getting dressed for the day—she set Elise’s notebook and a notepad on the writing table in front of her and wrote out the addresses she hoped she and Joshua would visit later. That way, though Joshua had pictures of the information on his phone, she’d have her own reference. And she wouldn’t have to stand so close to him as they both looked at those pictures on his phone. She glanced at her image in the mirror beside the desk. But then, maybe she did want to stand close to him. She shook her head and again focused on her list.

When she finished, she checked the time—7:07 a.m. Still plenty of time for her to get ready for the day before meeting Joshua in the lobby at eight thirty.
