Chapter Eleven

Kenzie

It’s been a few days since the Fourth of July party and my mind hasn’t quit running since. Today is my weekly lunch date with Granny at the Golden Spoon. Same diner, at the same time every Wednesday. I arrive at the Golden Spoon with mere minutes to spare and spot Granny at our usual table through the window. This diner has been around for fifty years, give or take. It has the classic, old school diner feel. Juke-box and all. It’s such a fun place to visit and it’s Granny’s favorite.

“Hey, Granny,” I say as I walk up to our booth. I’m convinced someone saves this booth for us every Wednesday at this time. We’ve never once had to wait for it even when they seem busier than usual.

“Hi, honey.” She stands to hug me and kisses my cheek. “How are you today, sweetie?”

We take a seat across from each other as the waitress, Gerri, walks up to us. “Two of my favorite ladies! How are y’all this morning?”

“Just peachy, Gerri,” Granny says. “How about yourself?”

“I’m doin’ fantastic! Can I get y’all your usual?”

“Yes, please,” Granny responds.

I nod my head. “Yes, ma’am.”

“You got it.” She walks away to put our order in. We’ve been coming here for what feels like forever now. Since we always sit at the same table, Gerri is always our waitress. Unless she’s sick, which is very rare. Gerri comes back with our sweet teas and scurries off to check on her other tables. I tie my straw wrapper in knots, trying to avoid the path my thoughts want to take me down.

I’ve kept myself more busy than normal so I wouldn’t have to think of Wes. It hasn’t worked to my advantage. Once I lay down at night, he’s all I can think about. It’s pure torture. Why, out of all the men in the world, do I have to have feelings for a Callahan?

“Mackenzie Ann,” Granny says, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Did you hear what I just said?”

“No, I didn’t. I’m sorry, Granny.”

“What’s goin’ on, dear?”

“I’m tired. I’ve been workin’ hard lately,” I tell her, hoping she won’t dig deeper.

“Oh, psh.” She swats my hand. “Who do you think you’re talkin’ to? Tell me what’s troublin’ you.”

I glance out the window, hesitating. Granny clears her throat causing me to turn to face her. She’s glaring daggers at me and I spill.

“I met someone when I was in Georgia,” I start.

“Why on earth didn’t you tell me?”

“It was supposed to be a one-night thing,” I admit.

“Mackenzie!”

“Granny! I had just been dumped by my boyfriend of two years. I wanted one night to completely forget about Craig.”

“So, one night with a mystery man. He must have made some impression if you’re still hung up on him.” She gives me a cat who ate the canary grin and coming from her, my little ol’ Granny, it’s very strange.

“That’s the thing. He isn’t just some mystery man.” I hesitate again. It’s never been so
