I’m out to lunch with Annie and my parents. This may have been a huge mistake. Dad and I just keep looking at the train wreck that has become lunch. Momma keeps telling Annie all sorts of embarrassing fucking stories from my childhood. Like when we were at a hardware store and I sat down and peed in one of the display toilets. Like that story ever needed to be brought back up, but it brought a smile to my Thunder’s face. So even at my expense, I can’t deny her that.

“Babe, I cannot believe you peed in that toilet!” She’s laughing so hard, she even snorted a couple times.

“I had to piss! Jesus!” Even I can’t help the grin that’s trying to show, Dad lost the battle a couple stories ago. Apparently the Miller men can’t resist the charms of her. I’m so fucking happy everyone loves her just as much as I do. We were all brought together by backwards events, but I wouldn’t change one thing for the world.

“So, son, what are you doing for your birthday?” Dad asks, probably trying to steer the conversation away from any more stories.

Before I can answer, Annie spits what she was drinking back out in her cup, and gets a murderous look on her face.

“Just exactly when is your birthday?” she asks low.

“Uh, it’s next week. December fifteenth.” I stutter out.

“And when, exactly, were you going to inform me of this?” She looks pissed. She has been moodier lately, I think it’s because she’s due in a couple weeks. But I’ve been having to tread lightly about a lot of things we used to be able to joke about.

“I guess I just didn’t think about it.”

“Well, we’re going to have to cut this lunch short. I’m so sorry, you guys. But it seems that Jayden and I need to plan a birthday party.” She sends a glare in my direction. Damn, looks like I’m in trouble. I won’t be getting any tonight.

Momma just starts laughing. “Ohhhh, you’re in trouble now.” While Dad is just sitting there with this shit eating grin on his face. Apparently that’s where I get it from.

“Let’s go, Jayden.” Oops, better pay attention.

I get up and push my chair in, leaving our trash for my parents to deal with since they got me in this mess. Annie tries walking ahead of me, but I grab her hand and force her to slow down so I can walk with my arm around her.

“Sweetheart, I really didn’t mean to not tell you. We’ve never made a huge deal out of birthdays. So it really didn’t even cross my mind.”

“Don’t you sweetheart me. It’s your damn birthday, how can you not make a big deal out of it?” she exclaims. Note to self, Annie likes birthdays.

I take a detour through a park close to where we parked. Hoping the scenery will help calm her down some, not that I would ever tell her that out loud. I like my nuts right where they are, thank you very much.
