Chapter 5

Seattle was an awesome town. Holden loved almost every minute, and he’d gotten to see Sam pulling a semi. His life was complete. It was such a ridiculous thing, but it was a fantasy fulfilled, and now Holden couldn’t wait to get Sam alone. Six months of having Sam in his bed had done nothing to assuage his desire. Unfortunately, Sam was pumped after his win, leaving Holden no other choice but to spend way more time with Xander than he’d like. To be fair, five seconds was longer than Holden liked. He knew this was something he’d have to get past. Xander was Sam’s assistant. Sam relied heavily on the other man’s presence. It wasn’t Sam’s fault Holden hated Xander. A lot. With a passion. Xander openly hated Holden too, so Holden didn’t feel guilty about his dislike of the man. It was worse when Sam left them alone together—like now.

“I just want to say it’s awesome how cool you are with me being with Sam almost every weekend.”

“You’re his assistant,” Holden said, doing his best to keep Xander in his place. “I’d be disappointed if you weren’t where he needed you to be every weekend.”

“Yeah, of course, but that’s not what I meant.” Suppressing an annoyed sigh, Holden gave Xander his full attention. The instant their gazes met, Xander smirked. Holden knew then it would be bad. Anything that brought the other man joy spelled trouble for Holden. Xander opened his mouth and proved Holden right. “I meant because we used to date. For a long time, we were pretty serious.”

It was like a punch to the gut. Holden did his best to hide how Xander’s bombshell hit home. Especially since Xander wasn’t finished. “Oh, no. You didn’t know, did you? It’s just like Sam to leave something like that out.”

Before now, Holden hadn’t seriously contemplated murder. As he stared at Xander’s smug face, he wondered if he could get away with it. Unfortunately, Holden realized the one thing he couldn’t handle was letting this ass know he’d gotten under his skin. Instead, he pasted on his most innocent smile and nodded.

“I know. It is just like Sam to leave out all the insignificant details about his working relationships.” The only indication Xander gave that Holden’s jab hit home was the loss of his smirk. Sam returned with three longnecks in hand and smiling in blissful ignorance of the ugliness surrounding him. Holden accepted the drink and Sam’s soft kiss, because hell would freeze before Holden gave Xander an ounce of satisfaction at his expense.

He’d known all along. Holden had felt in his gut that something was off about Xander. If Sam left out that detail, what else wasn’t he telling Holden? Better yet, was he keeping Xander a secret because they were still intimate? The question ate at the back of Holden’s mind and twisted his gut. Part of him wanted to bash bottles over people’s heads until he got the truth. The rest of him just hurt.
