Chronology

The exactness of the following dates is still debated by scholars, but the give an approximation of the chief eras of Egyptian history.

The power and influence of the Egyptian Pharaohs began in approximately 3200 BCE with the unification of both Upper and Lower Egypt.

The Old Kingdom, the time when the power of the Pharaoh was at its height, is considered to be from around 2686 BCE to 2055 BCE.

The Middle Kingdom, a time of growth and expansion, existed from 2055 BCE to 1550 BCE.

The New Kingdom, the age of Egyptian empire, existed from 1550 to 747 BCE.

Much of what we know of the Egyptian Book of the Dead comes from this time period as it went through its final redaction sometime in the 1500s BCE.
