8.3 VERTICAL CURVES

Gradients are determined from the lie of the land and the performance characteristics of the rolling stock. This section concerns itself with the geometry involved where two gradients meet. The question of the effect of irregularities in longitudinal level is covered in Chapter 2 .

Where two differing gradients meet, they are joined by a vertical curve, whose purposes are:

• to limit the vertical acceleration experienced by passengers, to a comfortable value,

• to limit the wheel unloading of freight vehicles,

• to prevent excessive compression of the springs of the inner axles of a bogie or locomotive having three or more fixed axles,

• to maintain under-clearance,

• to maintain over-clearance.
