News Chick

Bronson stood in front of the police station, smoothing his hair. The TV camera made him feel very self-conscious, especially standing next to this hot news chick. She was Canadian, so he’d never heard of her before. She smelled like perfume. Bronson thought he probably had a chance with her if he impressed her enough.

The camera guy counted down with his fingers: three, two, one.

“I’m standing here with Bronson Gerk, the only teenager to return safely from a recent excursion into the Banff backcountry. Bronson, tell me how you got separated from the others.”

“Uh . . . ”

“The chopper pilot who picked you up reported that you were chased by a grizzly into a valley off the marked trail. Were you attacked? Were any of your party injured?”

“Well, our guide, Harvin McTavish, did mention a bear, but I never saw it.”

“You sound skeptical.”

“Harvin isn’t the most reliable person in the world. He left our group alone several times when he was supposed to be leading us.”

“How many times and for how long were you alone?”

“Oh, three or four hours at a pop. That happened at least five or six times. Fortunately, I’m an experienced woodsman, and I did the best I could to keep the others safe, but . . . ”

“Did it seem strange to you that Mr. McTavish left six teens alone so frequently?”

Bronson put on his best confused face. “It really did seem odd. And then when the explosion happened . . . and the others didn’t come back from the pass, Harvin seemed kind of anxious to get away from the scene of the . . . accident.”

“Explosion?” The reporter’s eyes went wide. “This is the first we’ve heard of there being an explosion. Where were you when this happened? Where was Mr. McTavish?”

Bronson scratched his chin. “That’s the weird thing. We had hiked for at least twenty miles, without Harvin by the way. We stopped to rest, and I took a little nap. Next thing I know, the ground is shaking, and a huge explosion goes off in the pass. I sat up and everyone was gone. A big cloud of smoke rose up, and then Harvin came out from the pass.”

“So you’re saying that Mr. McTavish was nearby when the explosion occurred?”

“Yeah. And he survived. But the others . . . I sure hope they’re okay. Harvin made us leave the scene right away. I wanted to go back and see if we could get my friends, but he said we had to ‘get help.’ Every time I stopped to rest he threatened me. He even hit me once.”

“So you’re saying that Mr. McTavish struck you when you were merely trying to rest, following the possible deaths of your friends in an explosion?”

Bronson looked into the camera. “That’s exactly what I’m saying.”

The reporter patted Bronson on the shoulder. “You’ve been through a lot, and we appreciate you taking time to share your story with us.”

She turned to the camera. “Folks, this story is developing very quickly.
