‘Is this all there was?’ Ben asked. ‘Didn’t she even have a handbag with her? Why did she have that with her?’ He pointed at the meagre collection of things the officer had laid out on the counter.
The police officer shrugged. ‘Beats me. She was only wearing her dressing gown and slippers. The ornament and her mobile phone were on the seat beside her. The mobile’s a bit bashed but it works.’
Ben held his breath. ‘Was she drunk?’
The officer passed him a plastic bag containing the mobile phone and its shattered, gem-encrusted case. ‘Yes, she was over the drink-drive limit. There aren’t any clues on the phone. The most recent activity is listed as being a missed call from you.’ He nodded at Ben.
‘From yesterday,’ Ben said. ‘There’s nothing at all since then?’ A sick feeling clutched his stomach. If he had never left then Hayley would still be alive.
The officer shook his head. ‘Afraid not. One of our people checked it out. I’m very sorry, Mr Rogers, for your tragic loss.’
Jemima touched her father’s arm. ‘Mum’s gone. She’s really dead!’ She dissolved into tears. ‘You’ll have to move back into the house, I can’t live on my own!’
Ben hugged her awkwardly. When he had told Angel about Hayley she had told him in no uncertain terms that she wanted to live in the house with him, and that Jemima had to find her own place. He had a flash premonition of Angel and Jemima together. There would be lots and lots of shouting. He shook his head to clear the unwelcome image. ‘So you can’t say where Hayley was driving to?’ he asked the officer.
‘We’re not absolutely certain but we think, from the direction she was travelling in, she was heading to the hospital. Do you have any family or friends there at this time?’
‘No.’ Ben wiped away his own tears. ‘Was anyone else hurt?’
‘Luckily the driver of the lorry was uninjured.’ The officer attempted a small smile. ‘I hope that’s of some comfort, to know your wife didn’t cause another family such grief.’
Ben clutched the crystal figurine in his left hand as he and Jemima exited the building. Shrouded by the shadows of the car park he ran his hands lovingly over the naked form of the figure, surprised it was still in one piece as he knew Hayley had hurled it at him on that dreadful night when he’d left. He thought of Angel and oddly didn’t experience the usual tingling in the pants area. Strange, he couldn’t even recall what had attracted him to her in the first place.
‘I’m coming home, Crystalline,’ he whispered unthinkingly, raising the smooth crystal to his lips.
Ben didn’t notice a strange glow from inside the crystal, causing it to shimmer deliciously in the moonlight. Nor did he hear the silent sigh from within but Hayley was content to feel the warm lips of the man she loved on her body once again even if she was unable to respond.
