Ryder drove through the gates of Reynolds Station, the early morning sun glinting off the eastern windows of the ranch house. He hadn’t had a chance to say goodbye to Arden the day before. The time he’d spent with Tate rounding up the ranch hands and then the need to get back to the office ensured they hadn’t seen each other after the intense time in the kitchen.

And he wanted to see if she was okay.

Which was ridiculous because her family was around her so of course she was okay.

Only he had to see for himself.

The briefest concern that 6:00 a.m. was too early was allayed as Ace Reynolds headed out of the barn, waving as he caught sight of him. Which meant he’d make nice with Arden’s brother even though all he wanted was to get to her.

“Agent Durant.” Ace greeted him first. “Early morning?”

“I’d say the same for you,” Ryder said as he stepped out of his SUV and opened the back door for Murphy, “but I have to believe you’re always up at this hour.”

“Damn near every day of my life.” Ace grinned, the easy visage at odds with the serious nature he’d already observed in Arden’s oldest brother. “Goes with the territory.”

“I guess it does.”

Ace’s smile fell. “Belle update you already?”

Ryder shook his head. “Not yet. I just got here.”

“Then you’re in time for breakfast. Tate’s on KP duty so you’re not getting much more than nearly burned bacon and scrambled eggs.”

“He does make the best coffee of any of us,” Ace added as almost an afterthought.

“Thanks.” Ryder nodded. “Since I’m not the one cooking it sounds like heaven.”

Or would be if he shared it with Arden.

Proof positive that he really was further gone than he wanted to admit. Yet even as the knowledge flowed over him, he was hard-pressed to worry about it or shake it off or make excuses for it.

Which was a kick in the ass he’d think about later.

They stepped into the kitchen as a unit, the smell of bacon veering dangerously close to burned scenting the air. Murphy’s tail beat extra fast, but his training kicked in and he moved to the corner of the kitchen, out of the way.

Even if those brown eyes remained vigilantly focused on the direction of the stove.

“Every damn time, Tate,” Belle groused as she dragged a large tray out of the oven. “The oven has a handy-dandy timer, baby. You need to learn how to use it.”

Totally unapologetic, Tate shrugged. “I like it extra crispy.”

The moment she had the tray settled on the counter, Tate leaned in and kissed her with a loud smack. “Besides, I was too busy dreaming about last night to remember the timer.”

“Eww, enough. Seriously, you two.” Arden rubbed a hand over her face as she poured a mug of coffee, still unaware of Ryder’s presence. “It’s way too early.”

“Ryder.” Belle’s eyes twinkled as she pulled out of her husband’s embrace. Whether from the early morning kiss or her opportunity to surprise Arden, Ryder wasn’t sure.
