Bear was soaked to the bone. They all were before they had gotten into Gordonâs thirteen-foot Boston Whaler. The storm made it difficult to see a dozen feet in front of them. Jennyâs father was adept at driving his boat, but even he couldnât dodge every wave that reared its ugly head.
The two men were at the front of the boat. Bear held his phone so the other man could see, and they did their best to drive straight toward the dot on the map. Neither bothered speaking.
Meanwhile, Marissa and Rosie sat in the back of the boat, arms hooked to hold each other in place. Both clung to the boat for dear life, but Bear could see Marissaâs wild eyes searching the water.
The fierce look of determination on Rosieâs face never wavered. Bear was grateful for her help with the phone. He wouldâve figured it out eventually, albeit slower. It was better that she was here. One more person to be on the lookout for Mandy.
Once again, Bear wondered what was going on with Rosie. They hadnât talked about the meeting, but Bear would have to tell her how he knew where she was. Whatever Rosie was mixed up in, it had something to do with both the explosion and the real estate agencyâs penchant for throwing its weight around. Now he just had to figure out how Doyle fit into all this, and what he could do to protect Mandy and the Murrays. And Rosie, if she let him.
Another wave crashed over the front of the boat, hitting Bear square in the face. He braced for impact, but his hand slipped from the back of the chair. He went down to one knee, pain shooting up his leg. Gordonâs hand shot out and grabbed a handful of Bearâs jacket, dragging him back to his feet.
Bear nodded his appreciation. He planted his feet better and wiped off the surface of his phone, holding it out in front of them.
They were close.
Bear figured they were coming up on Mandyâs location within the next minute. He dug back into his memory to see if sheâd shared anything important about the boat. Sheâd called it a submarine, but she clearly wasnât underwater. It would be bobbing on the surface as long as it hadnât gone under.
His heart jumped to his throat, then fell down to the pit of his stomach. If the boat went under, Mandy would be free-floating in the water. She was a good swimmer, but he didnât know about Jenny. Then again, the best swimmers got pummeled by the waves and dragged along by the current.
Gordon shouted something and Bear turned back in his direction, shaking his head. He couldnât hear him. Gordon pointed at the phone, and Bear looked down. They were on top of the blue dot.
So, where were the girls?
Bear handed the man his phone and leaned over the side of the boat, trying to peer through the rain to see if he could spot a flash of somethingâanythingâthat indicated Mandy was close by.
