Chris

I became aware of myself as the world of dreams loosed it's grip on my tired mind. I was wrapped up in Anna's boiling hot body, which I was holding gently and she was still in the midst of sound sleep. I flicked my eyes around and tried not to wake her. I couldn't see a clock anywhere, but the curtains were letting light spill into the room in shafted rays. Bright and welcoming. They glazed her skin as I watched her, the world smiling on my precious Anna as she lay there, in her own world and unaware of this one.

I risked an arm, feeling the hair between my fingers at the nape of her neck and enjoyed the contented sigh she let out, shifting slightly to become more comfortable. She hugged me haphazardly, her body wanting more comfort while her mind was elsewhere.

I lay there, ignoring the discomforting sauna she made of me and blinked, flicking my eyes around and wondering at anything and everything.

I was certain that if this moment lasted forever, I'd never be unhappy ever again. Never feel bored. Never want for anything. It was going to stop when she woke, perhaps she'd scream or something, maybe leave and tell me to leave. But for the moment, she was here, she was holding me and I was holding her and things were absolutely wonderful. There are precious few times in anyone's life when they are in the state I was in. The lady I loved holding me and sleeping on me without a care. No bills attacking my mind, making me worry. No concerns for the moment, no bad weather. Nothing at all to worry about and no pressing concerns to divert my attention from her and the moment she allowed me to share in her company. If I were the kind of person to take a selfie, I'd have taken one now. But I wasn't. I had my memory to account for that and no desire to trivialise the occasion. It was private, secret and between she and I. To be treasured for it's fleeting nature. A spark in the shadows, there for so little time, and all the more beautiful for it's brevity.

But as with so many things, it was gone before I was through enjoying it, and her eyes flickered open, she moved her hand to rub at them and squint from the light as it brushed them.

“Morning.” I said to her, my voice low.

She looked up at me, some sudden worry flitting over her face, only to relax as I stared and rubbed her back, feeling the fabric of her blouse as though it were the only thing in the world.

“Morning.” She answered, pulling up and looking around a bit, still tired and dazed, but now aware of her surroundings.

Her jet black hair stuck to her cheek and mouth and she pulled it out absently as she sought out the clock, noted the time and sank back into me with an annoyed sigh.
