A Man of Manners

The ninjas roll as they touch down, sending long bursts in my direction. Their bullets tear chunks of stone out of the wall as they track me across the floor.

Wagner's body armour must have taken the brunt of the impact because he is still alive. He launches a massive kick into the small of the back of the closest ninja from his position on the floor. The impact would have killed an unprotected man, but the ninja looks merely winded. Still, it's enough, and Wagner takes advantage of the situation. He gets up, grabs the man by the balls and the scruff of the neck and hoists him high into the air. Then he slams him back down in a perfectly executed back breaker and the ninja's spine meets Wagner's extended knee with a horrible crack, like a rotten tree breaking. The body goes limp and Wagner throws it aside like a wet towel. He is truly magnificent when it comes to close combat.

I scramble for safety as the other ninja turns to fire at Wagner. As I reach the first bench, three more ninjas come swinging through the windows. The laser-pointers on their short, vicious-looking assault rifles sweep the room for targets and they all converge on Wagner where he stands over their dead comrade. He roars at them as all three open fire at close range. He bellows like a stuck pig as the bullets tear through his flesh.

Damn, I knew we should have brought the hardware this time. Don't we ever learn? If Wagner is to survive I have to do something, and do it fast.

“Hey, over here,” I shout before crawling as fast as I can towards the aisle. Bullets chew the benches to splinters around me.

Suki yells over the gunfire. “No, don't kill him.”

I like the sound of that.

“We need him alive.”

And I don't like the sound of that. Need me alive for what?

Looking under the front bench, I see Wagner launch a devastating sweep-kick at the legs of his nearest adversary. He's not nearly fast enough and the ninja is already airborne when Wagner's leg passes harmlessly beneath him. How the hell are we supposed to beat these guys?

I reach the aisle and charge the ninjas as fast as I can, hoping to get in close enough for them to be unable to use their heavy weapons. They must not have expected me to do something that stupid because they are very slow to react. Leaving all fancy theatrics aside, I go for a vicious body tackle. I duck under the rifle of the closest man as he opens fire and shoulder him in the solar plexus. He goes down with me and I twist in the air to use my not inconsiderable bulk to crush the air from his lungs. As I had hoped, the suits are flexible to allow their wearers to move freely and there's a muffled crack from inside as his ribs break. I grab his helmeted head with both hands and roll him over my back.
