Chapter Twenty-Four

We stepped out of the portal on the other side at the same slow pace we’d entered it. I’d tried to prepare myself as best I could for the mystery of what lay on the other side, but I wasn’t—

“Oh, my god,” I moaned, bending over at the waist, then falling to the ground as my stomach roiled and the world spun around me in a dizzying fashion.

“Calm,” Fred urged, crouching. “Stay calm. Deep breaths. It will pass.”

I closed my eyes with my hands on the hardwood floor. My senses were on fire. I could feel every grain of the wood, the motes of dust collected on it, and myriad other debris under my palms.

“I’m going to be sick,” I complained, my stomach doing its best to make me a woman of my word.

“No, you aren’t,” Fred said in that same even tone. “You’ll be fine. It’s already passing. In a few more seconds, you’ll be over it.”

“I don’t think so. I think I’m going …”

It started to pass. My world stopped spinning, and the protests from my stomach eased as whatever had inflicted itself upon me ran its course.

“What was that?” There was a hint of teasing in Fred’s voice that time.

“It’s passing,” I said. “You were right.”

“Music to my ears,” he said with a chuckle, standing up. “Come on, then.”

Groaning, I got to my feet, finally taking my first real good look around.

“This looks like a tool shed,” I muttered, wondering why Fred had brought us to this place. “I thought we were going to the Library of Avalon.”

“We will be,” Fred said, gesturing toward the wooden door straight ahead. “But unless you’re with the Mages Academy, this is where you come through. For obvious reasons, there’s no portal within the Library itself.”

“Right,” I said, pretending like I understood what those reasons might be.

The small box of a room, with its plain wooden walls and indeterminate light source, was not what I’d prepared myself for. Tall towers, swooping arches, stained glass everywhere, rack upon rack of books, that was what I’d been expecting. Perhaps we would have emerged into a giant stone antechamber, with a vaulted or domed ceiling rising higher than I could see, with torches glittering in the corners and a guide awaiting us.

This was slightly anticlimactic compared to that.

“Let’s be on it, then,” Fred said, pulling the door open and walking through it.

“It’s nighttime,” I remarked as I followed him onto a cobblestone street lined with houses and other buildings that looked straight out of a medieval building. Thatched roofing, wood framing holding together stone walls, and minimal windows.

“It usually is here, for whatever reason,” Fred said with a grunt. “More often than not. I don’t think it follows the normal rules, this place.”

“Fascinating,” I murmured, staring around at everything I could. It all looked so out of place. “Did we time travel?”

“Not that I’m aware of,” Fred said. “Though, I suppose it’s possible. I’m not sure where Avalon is. Nor have I ever thought to question when it is.
