Chapter 17

The first hit with the crowbar split Cillian Lowe’s scalp open and rattled his brain enough to make him stumble forward and fall to his knees.

Kayla was pleased with this. She had played through the scenario so many times in her mind as she watched Cillian set up his trap anew all morning. She had no idea his name was Cillian Lowe, or that he’d killed and eaten pieces of nearly a dozen people since the apocalypse started. All she knew was that he had tortured her parents. She doubted very much that they were still alive, but she hoped to find out as soon as she was done with him.

She also knew that the best-case scenario was to get him down on his knees with the first blow. All was going according to plan. She could taste that sweet rage back in her mouth again. This time, the bitterness was the undertone, playing second fiddle to the sugary taste of revenge. It was as real to her as the cooling spring breeze, the smell of pine pollen, or the feel of the heavy crowbar in her hands.

She brought the tool down a second time just as Lowe was turning his head to glance at his attacker. The edge of the curved section hit him just above his right eye, shattering the bone there and causing his eye to bulge out madly.

Surprisingly, he stayed upright on his knees, bringing his rifle around. She hit him a third time, this time on the nose. Blood sprayed out as his nose collapsed. Finally, he fell back, but he still gripped his rifle.

Kayla’s battle blood was up. She sneered and growled as she stepped over Lowe, jamming a foot down onto the rifle while reversing the crowbar. She plunged the chisel end of the bar into Lowe’s left eye. The metal sunk satisfyingly into his skull. She levered the tool as if trying to separate two boards. The chisel end tore through much of his brain, killing him and eliminating the possibility that he would come back as a member of the undead.

She pulled the crowbar out and stood there, gore dripping onto the asphalt next to Lowe’s head.

She stared down at the dead man, huffing, muscles thrumming, mind reeling with the savagery she’d just executed.

The yelling broke through a moment later. She looked up at the guy standing through the hole in the roof of the house. He was yelling at her to run. She realized why with a frightening jolt. The zombies who’d been milling about in the front yard had been drawn by the commotion and were coming toward her.

She turned and ran back toward the safety of the Sprinter van.

“We’ve got to help her!” Cooper said, rushing down the attic steps.

“What happened!?” Candice asked.

“Some girl just killed that guy,” Cooper said, rushing past them. “Bashed his head in. She saved our asses. Now we need to return the favor.”

“What about the weapons?” Leroy asked, following Cooper to the front door.
