Chapter Nineteen

“What job did you do for Podus?” Owen looked out the passenger side door as they traveled down a long rocky driveway. The stones had embedded themselves deep enough to make the ride smooth. Grass grew up to the car’s windows on either side. There were little tuffs of seeds dangled from the top of the grass blades, ready to fly free and claim some patch of soil as its own.

The house looked ordinary but isolated, much like Mom’s house. Witches wanted enough room to plant and grow food as well as the things they needed for spells. Forests surrounded the area around the lawn, which would have been nice if someone had mowed recently.

He could feel a spell on the property, but it wasn’t strong enough to keep anyone out, including them. It might have been at one point, though, when someone loved the spell enough to keep it up.

“Killed an abusive stalker of an ex-boyfriend.” Damian stopped the car just on the outside of the perimeter of the spell as if he could feel it too and put the car in park.

“Good.” Owen undid his seatbelt and got out. He could tell just from the state of the lawn that no one had been by the property for some time.

Owen was surprised the property hadn’t been sold after Cassie Hart’s death and wondered why not. Maybe the isolation so close to the city made it impossible to sell, although something about that didn’t make sense. Some city dweller must not like the hustle and bustle and would love the peace.

“I didn’t do it to be nice to him, Owen.” Damian followed him out of the car with his handgun held in his right hand, ready to shoot anything that posed a threat.

Owen smiled. It turned out, teasing Damian about his lack of caring was fun. And it was sort of sweet the way Owen was the only one who could get away with it.

Damian wore the lack of all things emotional as if it were a badge around his neck. Like that was his main motivation in life, and he wanted Owen to understand.

“I think you did. You found a solution to him paying you quickly.” Owen couldn’t keep the amusement off his face.

Damian shook his head and pulled Owen to him when he got close enough. “His information is more valuable than money.”

After meeting Podus, Owen had to agree.

If the story he told about the kid was anything to go by, Podus might have a gift. He had a way of absorbing information and recalling it as if he had things stored in neat little compartments like index cards in his brain that were all dated and labels.

“Stay close.” Damian let Owen go, trusting that he’d follow orders.

“I can shift and get an aerial view.” That would free Damian up from having to protect him. Even though Owen was perfectly capable of keeping himself safe most of the time, Damian had a protective instinct toward him that only grew stronger with the bond.
