A Word to My Reader

Before I get to my other acknowledgments, I want to take a moment and thank you for reading “Unconditional.” I know it wasn’t an easy story to read because, as a dog lover myself, it wasn’t an easy story to write. But at the same time, it was easy for me to believe that every single one of the dogs I’ve known in my life (and there have been many) would’ve acted as our hero does in this story—selflessly. So, while the story is tragic and sad, my intention was ultimately to present a hopeful tale of heroism. However you interpret it, I hope reading this story was a rewarding experience for you in some way.

And I want to thank you, specifically, for your time. I believe that time—above just about anything else—is the greatest gift one person can give to another. So thank you, dear reader, for spending your time on my story.

If you enjoyed this animal-centric take on the zombie apocalypse, consider checking out Tails of the Apocalypse, a collection of similar short stories by some of the most talented authors of speculative fiction around. Each of the authors gives you his or her take on what the apocalypse might look like—from nuclear war to world-killing virus to rebellion in a dystopian society to, yes, more zombies—with an animal as a central character. “Unconditional” touched so many readers that I decided to create this collection, which I also curated as editor. If you check out Tails, I hope you enjoy it.

And, a request—would you please return to the venue where you bought “Unconditional” and review and rate it? Reviews don’t have to be extensive. Sometimes one sentence is enough. Basically, tell others what you would want to know before making the decision to purchase a story like this yourself. And if you liked it, would you consider telling a friend about it? Or maybe share a link to it on Facebook, if you’ve a mind to?

As a reader of independent authors, you’re both our market and our marketing force. And really, when you think about it, providing a review is like publishing your own public service announcement for other readers. That’s a real contribution you’re making to ensuring quality in the world of independent publishing. Thank you for considering my request.
