As all of God’s commands, the command for Sabbath rest is ultimately for our good.

Beyond this, Sabbath is commanded by God. If we are following Jesus, we really cannot set one of the Ten Commandments aside for convenience or because we feel we know better. As 1 John puts it, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.”54 Notice the Scripture doesn’t say the commands are easy to keep, or that they will fit seamlessly within our present culture, or that they won’t ever make us feel uncomfortable. Instead, it says they aren’t burdensome—unduly taxing. As all of God’s commands, the command for Sabbath rest is ultimately for our good. For the flourishing of humankind. God gives us Sabbath because he loves us and we need it, and he commands it because without the command, we likely won’t take it as seriously as our souls require. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve failed to give the day to God much more often than not. Sabbath isn’t easy. But oh, it is good. And without stepping into Sabbath, our lives will always remain cluttered.
