Chapter Nine
To say I was nervous when we approached my father was an understatement. To say there hadnât been times throughout my life when I longed for this moment would be a lie. In some strange way, I loved him, even though weâd never met. But I couldnât shake the thought that I didnât know him, that neither, in all honesty, did Mam. Above all else, he was one of the fair folk, and the fact he looked like Dureth reinforced my belief that he couldnât be trusted.
The very second I saw him, sitting on the edge of a fallen tree, my heart skipped a beat. He lifted his head. Thomas was right, he was the spitting image of his brother. Iâd never thought of Dureth as handsome, though all of the fair folk are, and members of the Tylwyth Teg nobility even more so. There was something to Durethâs presence that belied the cold heart inside. Dylan lacked that quality. When my father smiled, it felt like the whole forest paid attention and granted him their affection. It was no wonder Mam described him as the most beautiful man she had ever seen.
He stood and walked towards me. I gripped Thomasâ hand tighter, wanting to keep him close, partly for reassurance, and partly because I had no intention of ever letting him go again.
âI see your mother in you,â Dylan said. âHow is she?â
âBetter for knowing you werenât the one who cursed her.â
He flinched at my words and the look in his eyes was so dejected I almost imagined I heard his heart break.
âIâm sorry,â I said instantly, âthat came out wrong. I just meant that she was happier now that she knows you didnât betray her...â
I almost growled at my clumsy words. I was never good with people, with emotions, but I wasnât callous. At least, Iâd never been before. This had to be one of the most important meetings of my life and I seemed to be doing my very best to cock it up.
âShe misses you,â I added to try and ease the pain Iâd obviously caused.
âI miss her. Iâm sorry if my reaction made you feel bad. In truth, Dureth has told me more than once of Carysâ belief that I cursed her and caused the death of your grandmother. I just hadnât wanted to believe him. He also said that she turned her back on both you and magic. Is that true?â
âNo. She turned her back on magic, which sheâs now finding again, but she never turned her back on me.â I sighed. âShe just tried to protect me the only way she knew how.â
âSheâs a good woman, your mother. The best I ever met and from everything Thomas has told me, you follow her in that aspect as well as in appearance.â
I smiled as Thomas squeezed my hand. âHe might have a biased opinion,â I said.
Dylan laughed and patted Thomas on the shoulder. âIâm sure he does, but that doesnât make it any less true.
