He pushed out a frustrated-sounding breath. “The account you were trying to claim the money from has been idle for the past six years.”

Valentina narrowed her eyes. “No. That is incorrect. Not six years idle. It was eight years.”

He made a face, as if she were trying his patience.

She felt compelled to explain and set the record straight. “I have been away for eight years, not six.” He opened the file and flipped a page up. “The account was opened twelve years ago with a paltry thousand dollars.” Paltry? She kept her mouth closed as he continued.

“Following the initial deposit, there are four years’ worth of regular deposits of five hundred dollars at the first of every month, and corresponding low-value withdrawals throughout the month. The final balance at the end of four years was three hundred and twelve dollars and sixty-three cents.”

“Yes. I was trying to get that money. I do not understand why it is a threat.”

“That’s not the threat. Two months after you went back to Russia, there were a series of regular five thousand dollar deposits made each week like clockwork over the next two years.” She scrunched her brows in confusion. “No. I never put any more money in there after I left.”

“Well, somebody did. Who was it?”

“How could I possibly know that?” Valentina pressed her lips together to calm herself before she started spouting all the colorful swear words she knew. She calmly added, “There has obviously been some sort of mistake. Perhaps a clerical error.”

“Miss Petrova, there is over five hundred thousand dollars in this

‘idle’ account you were about to claim today. Deposits were made regularly for many several months, and then nothing for six long years. How do you explain this phenomenon?”

Valentina took a different approach. “I cannot explain it.

However, I only want the three hundred and twelve dollars and sixty-three cents. The rest is not mine. You can keep it.”

“I’m afraid it’s all or nothing, Miss Petrova. What is all this money to be used for?” His expression softened for a moment. He moved closer as if he wanted to share a confidence. “The truth is, we want to know if there is Russian organized crime involvement.”

“What? No. I do not associate with the mafia.” He flipped another page. “But what about your family.”

“My family is all dead.”

“Is it possible that before your father died he put money into your college account?”

“My father wasn’t even the one who sent money during my college years. The regular deposits came from my mother and possibly my aunt.”

“Are you sure? Could he have put money in your account?”

“My father is dead. I do not believe he ever bothered with my bank account.”

“What did he bother with?”

“I do not understand.”

“What do you know of his connections to the mob?” Her shoulders lifted in a light shrug. “I have no idea. The knowledge of whatever or whomever he was involved with died with him.”

“What about your brother-in-law Ivan Masrakova? He was a very bad man.”

“He is also dead.
