December 19, 1923 – Pipe dreams

By the time Mercy returned to the house, mixed boughs of winter greens had been artfully hung around the front door, accentuated with red velvet bows. Inside the entrance, branches of holly, cedar, and fir were stacked in big heaps. The dogs stopped to sniff the branches on their way to the kitchen. For a moment it looked like Rusty was going to lift his leg but a single tut from Mercy stopped him. Pain was needling her. She wanted to head straight for her suite but that would have been unmannerly. She regrated not participating more in the decorating part of the holiday this year. She just didn’t have the physical strength, but her heart was full, knowing family and friends would do a magnificent job for her.

From the green salon, the sound of Gerry singing “Deck The Halls” rang out. Her voice was melodic and confident as she accompanied herself on the piano.

“Good walk?” Josie asked.

Mercy removed her coat and hung it in the cloakroom. “Very good, thank you,” she said. “I’m going to take a nap before dinner. Gloria, please remind me, who else is arriving today?”

Gloria, who was pleating a bow out of red velvet, didn’t look up. “The Leacocks. They rang while you were out. They don’t expect to be here until six.” She twisted a narrower length of ribbon through the middle of the bow to hold it together. “As usual they’ll be going into town every day because the gallery is so busy.” With only four guest suites, Gloria didn’t need a score sheet to keep track of guests.

“If they’re here by six, that’s plenty of time to freshen up.” Mercy forced a note of bright anticipation into her voice. She stood tall, determined to dispel anyone’s impression that she was growing feeble in body or mind. “Remind me, what room have they selected?”

“Romance.”

Mercy shivered at a distant memory of submitting to Silverstone in the Romance Room. With an unusual array of equipment in its large back area, she considered its name at least partly ironic. It was the smallest of the suites because it was divided in half. The front half was innocuous enough with a beautiful bed, its own fireplace and two cozy armchairs. The perfect setting for anyone’s romantic dream.

However, unlock the door to the concealed room, and a person stepped into a chamber equipped for adventurous play. A doctor’s office, complete with examining table. It had been remodeled over the past year and the new furniture was made of metal and enamel coated. All other appliances were white as well. Gone was the heavy, dark furniture that had been popular in the early part of the century. Now, it was modern and bright and terrifying.

The devices in this room could test a submissive partner’s trust in her man. Mercy had always put her fate into Silverstone’s hand with confidence. However, the one time they’d explored medical play, she’d hesitated. Remembering how protective he was of her, she’d only consented if he promised to stop if asked.
