CHAPTER NINE

Hauled ass was relative.

There were kids and women and older adults in the civilian population, and I wasn’t a speedster with helping Muir.

We made it and put another set of cars between us and any aliens that might come up behind us.

“We need to cross to the other side,” said Tritt.

“We need to get off the street,” said Story.

“Pick another building,” Tritt indicated the ones around us. “Unless you have a different Shangri la in mind.”

“I know where we need to go,” said Story, a wrinkle between his bushy eyebrows as they knit in concentration.

“Can you get there?”

“We can,” said Story.

“We better get there quick or there won’t be any of us left,” Tritt grumbled as he glanced over the nine of us left.

Story moved his eyes across the soldiers lined up across from him. He nodded to each, his lips smirked in a half smile.

“There’s no way to say thank you that’s going to make sense,” he said. “But I appreciate it. We appreciate it.”

Tritt took a deep breath.

“Let’s just get you where you’re supposed to be,” said Tritt. “You can thank any of us left to say it too.”

“Think you can get a couple of your men to run point for us, keep an eye out for trouble?”

“Point?” scoffed Tritt. “Looks who’s talking military now. Swear, you give a General a rope, he thinks he’s a cowboy.”

“I got a lot of scared people who’d feel a hell of a lot better with guns on both ends.”

Tritt motioned Houston closer.

“Hell,” Story continued. “I ain’t afraid of saying I’m the most scared.”

“Cowboy here might give you a run for your money, General.”

“Cowboy, huh?” Story gave me a look.

“No idea,” I told him.

I wasn’t even from Texas.

“How far we taking this General?”

“Six more blocks,” Story turned his head to glare at the cars that stretched until the road curved inland and away from sight.

“Big building on the left. Grocery store. We won’t miss it.”

“If the Lick have any say, we won’t get the chance to miss it.”

“Then let’s keep those suckers quiet,” Story said.

Tritt tapped me on the arm and hauled me past all the civilians so we could take point.

“You see something ain’t human, you fucking shoot it,” he gave simple instructions.

Then we were off again.
