First Meal
Your blender can be a great ally if you're not capable of or interested in eating solid foods first thing in the day during high-stress times. The following are ingredients for a fruit smoothie/protein drink that resembles a meal. Let's call it the “Survival Smoothie.”
1. Liquids: Regular milk, fruit juice, soy milk, and almond milk all provide good nutrients. Almond milk is something you can make at home and keeps much longer than cow's milk. Another attribute of almond milk (it's about the same price as cow's milk if you buy it in stores) is it won't be as digestively distracting as soy or regular milk if you cannot tolerate legumes or lactose. It's best not to use most fruit juices every day because of the sugar thing, although pomegranate juice is highly touted. Yogurt could be the main liquid ingredient and is something else you can make at home when it's time.
2. Fruit: Your favorite fruits can be used to make your drink sweet and pulpy. Bananas, apples, pineapple, pears, and peaches are usually available locally.
3. Supplements: Protein supplements can be divided into three types: soy, whey, and grain/grass/vegetable. Buy these in bulk if you can, for the best price, and remember the legume-lactose advisory.
