Knife Fishing

More effective than game wardens would like it to be, knife fishing has taken many a large salmon, trout, or pike during their spawning runs up rivers and streams. Spawning is hard work, and often an exhausted fish will ignore a person who approaches it slowly, knife held low, below the surface of the water, in a tight fist, ready to stab forward. Cutting edge should be held upward. Stab hard, with a purpose. When the blade penetrates as far as you can drive it into the fish’s body, just below the spine, behind its gill, raise upward, as though trying to lift the fish out of the water with your knife’s blade. In most cases the fish will fall free, back into the water, but too badly wounded to swim more than a few yards without turning belly-up.

Be prepared. Killing with a knife is not the fun activity that some tactical-type magazines would have you think it is. Use a knife with the stabbing power to do the job—for example, the esteemed Tom Brown Tracker knife is a poor choice, because of its very wide blade. Schrade’s BT-01 survival knife is so effective, though, that it’s scary. Do not be tentative; you’re killing a live creature, not chipping ice for a highball.
