A Word About Paper

What’s the best kind of paper for paper airplanes? Well, almost any paper will do, but you especially want something light and stiff, which holds a crease. Newspaper is too floppy. The glossy paper used for ads and magazines won’t hold a crease: as soon as you let go, the airplane starts unfolding itself! The special origami paper called kami is best, but it’s hard to find and usually only comes in squares. That leaves ordinary white copy paper. It’s a bit thick, but it’s stiff, holds a crease, and comes in rectangles. And you can get it anywhere! Not perfect, but close!

Here’s a little secret about the planes in this book. They’re made with paper that’s an unusual shape, a little slimmer than letter, but fatter than A4. That means you can fold the planes with either size of paper, and they’ll still fly great! If you want to make the paper the same size as in this book, here’s how. But remember: it’s a secret!
