Repel

They glided silently through the crisp dawn air. It was still dark enough for their silhouettes to hide in the sky to anyone not looking for them. Judging by the torches, a contingent broke off of the main force and moved to get around Riyadh while the main army moved toward the front gate.

A deep roll of thunder rippled across the sky. Clouds formed out of nowhere as sparks erupted around a singular flying entity.

“Atta girl,” Illume whispered.

Like a meteor wrapped in a cradle of lightning, Ingrid slammed into the ground. The resulting explosion of light made Illume raise his hand to shield his eyes. It was like watching a weld being made. First, there was silence, then a clap of thunder so loud it rattled Illume’s insides. Sparks spidered out in all directions, burning holes in anyone unfortunate enough to be within fifty feet of her.

Another roll of thunder sounded. A second bolt of lightning flew from the clouds above and struck Ingrid’s location. The main force turned and re-directed its march toward her. Melpomene squeezed Illume. She leaned in so her lips were next to his ear in an effort to counteract the roar of the wind.

“Drop me behind them,” she requested. “Don’t land; just get me close to the ground.”

Circling about, Illume and Trillian skimmed the ground a few hundred yards behind the main force. Melpomene jumped off the dragon. Illume watched as she hit the sand and rolled. Bouncing up back to her feet, she gave him a thumbs-up as he flew away.

Lightning continued to fly and thunder cracked as Ingrid did what came naturally to her. Illume steered Trillian to circle back toward the city. Both he and the dragon turned once again. The main force closed in on Ingrid, who handled herself rather well. Piles of bodies rose around her like a wall.

“Fire storm, buddy. Let’s cut off the main attack,” Illume commanded.

Letting out a roar. Trillian streamlined his body as he flapped his wings as hard as he could. Picking up speed, they descended until they skimmed the rooftops of the city. The second they passed over the walls, Trillian took a deep breath.

A blast of fire erupted from his mouth as he exhaled. It carried such energy and violence to it, Illume had to duck his head from the residual heat. A vortex of flame formed where his breath met the sand. The once soft white sand was turned into molten glass as it erupted into an inferno and slowly oozed its way toward both sets of enemies.

Trillian ceased his attack once he completely cut off each force from each other. Arrows whistled past Illume as they finished their strafing run. Pulling up, they circled back around. This time, they lined up a run against Anoobys’s forces.

Once again, the dragon took a deep breath. Illume used his ice magic to deflect any arrows that would hit either him or Trillian’s eyes and mouth. Every other projectile just shattered against his scales like dead twigs.
